Judo dates back to 1882 and was developed in Japan by Professor Jigoro Kano. Its origins come from the principles of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu which is a form of hand to hand combat used in Feudal Japan by Samurai warriors.
Today, Judo is a ‘martial art’ in addition to being a philosophy, and an Olympic sport. It was the first ‘martial art’ to participate in the Olympics, starting in 1964 at the Tokyo Olympics. It is practised around the world by men and women of all ages, including judo for kids, teens and adults. Judo is also a part of the Special Olympics and Paralympics games, making its Paralympic debut at Seoul in 1988.
The Gentle Way
Judo means “the gentle way” translated in Japanese. It promotes evasion of an attack through leverage.
Using judo, a smaller person can defend themselves against a larger person by using the attacker’s strength, power and leverage to get them off balance. Judo emphasizes:
- How to get the maximum effect with the minimum effort
- Mutual welfare and benefit
- That size doesn’t matter
- Physical fitness & sportsmanship
Regular judo players also tend to maintain healthy levels of fitness and weight control.
Students of judo learn spectacular throws, takedowns and grappling.
The goal of judo is to make your opponent lose their balance and end up on the ground. From there, techniques like chokes, arm locks and pins can gain you the upper hand and control a situation, no matter your size or location. In turn, these techniques can be used for self-defence*; to up your BJJ or MMA game and or meet like-minded people in a friendly and welcoming environment.
*Of course, preventing an altercation is always the best policy.
